ECA Public Affairs Roundup | Fixing the UK's Electrical Skills Shortage

There is a shortage of electricians in England. Electricians are crucial to society and the economy, but are too often overlooked by policy makers.

There aren’t enough competent, qualified electricians, with significant differences between regions. ECA launched its Recharging Electrical Skills Charter at the House of Commons. The Charter highlights the significance of the electrical contracting sector and electrical skills in achieving the UK's net zero goals.

Taking Action on Skills

The UK has a shortage of electrical skills, and yet electricians have great careers.

They're well paid jobs and they support the transition to Net Zero and all the many opportunities that that affords. So ECA delved into the data to find out why people weren't progressing from electrical courses to apprenticeships. And we were shocked to find out how broken the skills pipeline really was.

So we crunched that data by English constituencies, and some constituencies had less than 10 apprentice starts last year. We sent this data to the new MPs in the 100 worst constituencies, and since then, we've met MPs, ministers and civil servants at party conferences in Westminster and online to talk about ECA's solutions to fixing the broken skills pipeline.

If you want to find out how your region is doing, please go to eca.co.uk., and look at our heat map on the Skills for the Future page. The regions are all marked red, amber or green depending on how many apprentices have started in your area.
